NBSS Week 24 – Chair class part 4, a full-day upholstery demo, and a bit more work on the basket weave table

We began this week fitting the crest rail to our chair. We first set up the mortise machine and cut the mortises for both the rear seat post tenons and the upper rear backsplat.

NBSS Week 23 – Chair class part 3 and some more basket weave table construction

Week three of the chair class began with more mortises. We set up the mortising machine to cut the side seat rail mortises and this involved creating some unique angled blocks to position the legs, as these mortises are angled.

NBSS Week 22 ¬– Chair project week 2 and some basket weave table redesigns

This week began with a delivery from Irion lumber with wood for our chair classes. We unloaded the lumber and had a lecture on the best way to lay out the chair parts for grain and color match as well as for yield on each of our boards. We then cut out the individual parts and rough milled the rear leg posts.

NBSS Week 19 – Completing the “Rasta” Windsor chair and more toolbox details

With the undercarriage of our chair glued up last week, we moved on to completing the top half this week. We started off by finishing the shaping of the seatback hoop with the spokeshave and then test fitting it into our seats. Once the hoop was fitted we grabbed our spindles out of the kiln, finish shaped those, and fit each one to its hole in the seat. With each spindle now positioned and fitted into its individual hole, we refitted the hoop and marked the top of the spindles where they intersected the hoop.

NBSS Week 18 – Windsor chair class Part 3, and more toolbox details

Peter Galbert worked us hard this week in our chair class. We started the week by shaping the legs to their final profiles using the spokeshave.

We then inserted the legs into our seat blank in their proper orientation and marked the areas that needed to be drilled for both the top and bottom stretchers.
